about

Kiwi rockers Lazy Fifty are back! The four-piece from Gisborne NZ have returned with a new single, Devil On His Day off – a hard and fast blast of pure rock ‘n’ roll.

Devil On His Day Off is a tale of friendship between Jesus and the Devil, their public personas of good versus evil are maintained to appease the human need for a hero and a villain.

On their day off Jesus and the Devil throw off their monikers, play music “the Devil’s on his day off, he’s grabbed his bass guitar, Jesus on the 7 string at the bar”, hang out together and get up to all kinds of mischief.

The Devil is good bugger (kiwi slang trust us it's a compliment!) and is sick of being cast as the bad guy “he’s tired of faking, he’s tired of breaking, he’s tired of taking the blame all of the time”.

A good old fashioned rock song, Devil On His Day off showcases epic guitar harmonies, enhanced with catchy lyrics and smooth vocals to deliver a modern rock anthem with a classic feel.

Greg Haver says it was great to re-visit the world of Lazy Fifty again after previously working on their ‘2021: A LAZY ODYSSEY’ album. “It’s always encouraging to see a band refresh and continue on their musical journey, a path that Adrian constantly treads in his desire to expand his virtuosity and push the boundaries of the genre.”

Devil On His Day Off is the second single from Lazy Fifty’s fourth studio offering ‘Neighbour of the Beast’ (due for release July 2024). Coming in the form of an EP, ‘Neighbour of the Beast’ is the Adrian Athy show, with a bit of Greg Haver thrown in for good measure. Adrian composed all of the songs and played most of the parts - lead/backing vocals, lead/rhythm guitar and bass guitar - with Greg Haver contributing drums/percussion along with production.

lyrics

Devil On His Day Off © Adrian Athy

The first time that I saw this dude
He wore a full length leather coat
I asked him for a cigarette
He offered a bag of coke
The devil’s on his day off and he’s grabbed his bass guitar
Jesus on the 7 string at the bar

He talked to me in Latin and I could not understand
Jesus offered to interpret he’s talking about the band
He kind of looked familiar
You know a face you just can't place
He sat down put his feet up and he offered fucking cake

Devil’s on his day off no he won’t be making plans
He’s got skulls in his pockets and cobwebs in his hands

I know this place I know these rooms
Now I’m back here far too soon
This place I’ve been before
And it’s good to be back home again

Well he’s tired of faking he’s tired of breaking
He’s tired of taking the blame all of the
Time is the healer of wounds
Follow the moon
Bare me your soul tonight now go

The next time that I saw that dude that joker in a full length coat
I asked him how he’s doing
He just smiled and offered me a smoke

about

Lazy Fifty Gisborne, New Zealand

Lazy Fifty’s music harks back to the classic rock of the 70s, enhanced with a healthy dose of funk, rocking rhythms & impressive guitar. Our name comes from the saying of a friend. When he asked you for a ‘lazy 20’ (dollars), you knew you’d never see the money again. That was a long time ago and our friend is no longer with us. In memory of him, and allowing for inflation, we are now ‘Lazy Fifty’. ... more
